Why aftercare matters

After a tooth is removed, a blood clot forms in the socket; it's the foundation of healing. Most aftercare instructions protect that clot, ease pain and swelling, and prevent infection. Following them makes healing faster and more comfortable.

The first day

  • Bite firmly on the gauze for 30 to 45 minutes, without checking it every minute.
  • Don't spit or rinse hard, and don't drink through a straw; these can dislodge the clot.
  • Don't smoke for at least 48 to 72 hours.
  • Cold compresses on the cheek, 15 minutes at a time, during the first 24 hours.
  • Soft, cool or lukewarm food, chewing on the other side.
  • Painkillers as your dentist advises.
  • Sleep with your head slightly raised on an extra pillow.

From the second day

  • Start gentle warm salt-water rinses after meals, without swishing hard.
  • Brush as usual, avoiding the extraction site for the first few days.
  • Return gradually to normal food as comfortable.
  • If you have stitches, they either dissolve or are removed at your follow-up.

What's normal and what isn't

NormalContact the clinic
Light bleeding or blood-tinged saliva on the first dayHeavy bleeding that continues despite pressure on gauze
Swelling that increases for two days, then easesSwelling that grows after day three, or with fever
Pain that eases gradually with painkillersSevere pain starting 2โ€“4 days later and spreading to the ear

What is a dry socket?

A dry socket happens when the clot breaks down or falls out, leaving the bone exposed. It usually appears two to four days after the extraction, with severe pain that can spread to the ear and a bad smell or taste. It's more common after lower wisdom tooth removal and in smokers. Treatment at the clinic is simple: cleaning the socket and placing a soothing dressing, and the pain eases quickly. Don't wait if you have these symptoms.

After healing: replacing the missing tooth

Leaving a gap can let neighbouring teeth tilt and the bone shrink over time. Options include dental implants, a bridge or a denture. See bridge vs implant. In some cases the implant can be placed on the day of extraction; see immediate implants.

Frequently asked questions

When can I eat after an extraction?

Once the numbness wears off, with soft, lukewarm food, avoiding chewing on the extraction site for the first few days.

When can I smoke after an extraction?

Ideally not for at least 72 hours; smoking is one of the main causes of dry socket and delayed healing.

How long does the socket take to heal?

The gum heals in about one to two weeks, while the bone takes several weeks to months to fill in.

Can I exercise after an extraction?

Avoid strenuous exercise for the first two days, as it can increase bleeding and swelling.
