Which braces suit you?

Orthodontics isn't one treatment anymore. There are traditional metal braces, tooth-coloured ceramic braces, and removable clear aligners (Invisalign is the best-known brand). Each has strengths and limits, and the right choice depends on your bite problem, age, lifestyle and how committed you can be. This guide was written under the supervision of Dr. Banan Alhawamdeh.

Types of braces

1. Metal braces

Small metal brackets joined by a wire. The most widely used option โ€” effective for most cases, including complex ones, and usually the lowest cost. The downsides: they're visible and need extra effort to clean around.

2. Ceramic braces

Work exactly like metal braces but the brackets are tooth-coloured, so they're less noticeable. A good middle ground โ€” just watch coloured drinks.

3. Clear aligners

A series of custom clear trays, changed every few weeks to move teeth gradually. Almost invisible and removed for eating and brushing โ€” but they must be worn 20โ€“22 hours a day, and they don't suit every case.

When clear aligners may not suit you

  • Some severe bite problems or complex tooth movements.
  • If you know you won't wear trays most of the day.
  • Untreated decay or gum inflammation โ€” these must be treated first with any type of braces.

Am I too old for braces at 25 or 40?

There's no upper age limit as long as the gums and supporting bone are healthy. More adults than ever straighten their teeth, often with ceramic or clear options. For adults we pay extra attention to:

  • Gum health: moving teeth over inflamed gums or reduced bone can worsen gum recession. Gums are assessed before and during treatment โ€” Dr. Banan's specialty.
  • Coordination with other treatment: orthodontics is sometimes a first step before implants, crowns or a smile makeover.

How long does treatment take?

Most cases take roughly one to two years. Simple cases can be shorter, complex ones longer. With aligners, the timeline depends heavily on wearing them as instructed.

What affects the cost?

  • Type: metal is usually lowest, then ceramic, then clear aligners.
  • Complexity and duration of treatment.
  • One or both arches.
  • Retainers and any preparatory treatment such as cleaning or gum care.

After braces: retainers

Teeth tend to drift back, so a retainer is part of the treatment, not an extra โ€” either a fixed wire behind the teeth or a clear tray worn at night.

Frequently asked questions

Are clear aligners faster than metal braces?

Not necessarily. Duration depends more on the case than the type, and with aligners on wearing them 20โ€“22 hours a day.

Do braces hurt?

You may feel pressure or mild soreness for a few days after fitting and after each adjustment or new tray. It eases quickly.

Can I have braces if my gums have receded?

Often yes, after a gum assessment and treatment of any inflammation. Sometimes braces even help reposition a tooth that is causing recession.

When should a child first see an orthodontist?

Around age 7 is recommended, as some jaw and bite problems are easier to treat during growth.
