What is composite bonding?

Composite bonding (tooth-coloured "bond" fillings) is a resin material bonded directly to the tooth, sculpted by hand and hardened with light. It's used to treat decay instead of old silver fillings, and to improve appearance: closing gaps, repairing small chips, and adjusting shape and colour โ€” often in one visit with little or no drilling.

When do we use composite bonding?

  • Treating decay with a tooth-coloured filling.
  • Closing gaps between front teeth.
  • Repairing a small chip or crack on the edge of a tooth.
  • Reshaping a small or uneven tooth.
  • Covering spots or stains that whitening can't remove.
  • Replacing old silver fillings for cosmetic reasons.

The process

  1. Shade matching to your teeth.
  2. Preparation: removing decay if present, or light surface roughening for cosmetic work.
  3. Bonding: an adhesive bonds the material to the tooth.
  4. Building and sculpting layer by layer, each hardened with light.
  5. Final polish so it looks natural and blends in.

Bonding is excellent for minor to moderate changes; a full smile transformation may suit veneers better.

What affects the cost?

  • The size of the filling and how many tooth surfaces it covers.
  • Purpose: treating decay, or cosmetic build-up to close a gap or reshape.
  • The number of teeth.
  • How deep any decay goes and whether further treatment is needed.

Caring for bonding

  • Limit coffee, tea and smoking, and rinse afterwards.
  • Avoid biting hard objects with your front teeth.
  • Have regular professional cleaning and polishing to keep its shine.

Frequently asked questions

How long does composite bonding last?

Usually several years, depending on its position, size and your habits; it may need polishing or renewal over time.

Does bonding change colour?

It can stain gradually with coffee, tea and smoking; regular polishing helps keep its colour.

Can a gap between front teeth be closed without braces?

Small to moderate gaps, yes โ€” usually in one visit with bonding. Large gaps or bite-related gaps may need orthodontics.

Should I whiten before bonding?

Yes โ€” if you want whitening, do it first, since the bonding shade is matched to your final tooth colour.
