Do dental implants hurt?

It's one of the questions we hear most before implant treatment, and the short answer is: the procedure itself doesn't hurt, because it's done under local anaesthetic, and most patients describe the days after as manageable discomfort, similar to or milder than after a tooth extraction. This guide was written under the supervision of Dr. Banan Alhawamdeh, specialist in gum surgery and dental implants.

During the procedure

  • The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, so you feel pressure and vibration, not pain.
  • A single implant usually takes under an hour.
  • We explain every step before starting, and you can ask to pause at any moment.

After the procedure: what to expect day by day

PeriodWhat's usual
Day 1Mild to moderate discomfort as the anaesthetic wears off, controlled with usual painkillers
Days 2โ€“3Swelling may increase slightly then start to ease; sometimes a light bruise
Days 4โ€“7Clear improvement and a return to most daily activities
1โ€“2 weeksThe gum heals around the implant; stitches removed if any

Cases needing a bone graft or several implants may swell a little more, but it remains temporary.

How long do the gums take to heal?

The gum around the implant usually heals within one to two weeks. The implant fusing with the bone usually takes 3 to 6 months depending on the case and site, after which the final crown is fitted. During this time you live normally, following the aftercare instructions.

Making recovery easier

  • Cold compresses on the outside during the first 24 hours.
  • Painkillers as advised, ideally taking the first dose before the anaesthetic wears off.
  • Soft food for the first days, chewing on the other side.
  • No smoking; it delays healing and raises the risk of implant failure.
  • Gentle cleaning and salt-water rinses from day two.
  • Keeping your follow-up appointments.

When to call the clinic

  • Pain that gets worse after day three instead of better.
  • Increasing swelling with fever.
  • Bleeding that won't stop with pressure.
  • A feeling that the implant is moving.

Why gum expertise matters in implants

Healthy gums and tissue around an implant are among the most important factors for long-term success, and gentle handling of the tissue reduces discomfort afterwards. We assess the gums before implant treatment and monitor them afterwards. Read also immediate implants and types of implants.
