Why does root canal cost vary?
Root canal treatment is one of the procedures patients most often ask about cost for โ especially when pain strikes suddenly. The price depends on the tooth and the complexity of the case. Here's what determines the cost, and what treatment should include for the tooth to last.
Factors affecting the cost
1. Tooth type and number of canals
Front teeth usually have one canal; back molars may have three or more, sometimes curved or narrow. More, and more complex, canals mean more time and work.
2. First treatment or retreatment
Retreating a previously treated tooth is more complex โ the old filling must be removed and the canals cleaned again.
3. Number of visits
Many cases are completed in one visit; severe infection or an abscess may need more.
4. Restoration afterwards
After treatment the tooth needs a final restoration: a filling, or a core with a crown โ usually for back teeth. Always ask whether the quote includes the final restoration; an unrestored tooth is prone to fracture.
5. X-rays and diagnosis
X-rays before, during and after treatment are essential to confirm the canals are cleaned and sealed to the tip.
Root canal or extraction: which is better value?
Extraction may look cheaper at first, but replacing the tooth later with an implant or bridge usually costs more and takes longer. Saving the natural tooth is often the better value and better for oral health โ as long as the tooth can be restored.
Signs you may need a root canal
- Throbbing or spontaneous pain, especially at night.
- Lingering sensitivity to cold or heat.
- Pain when biting.
- Swelling or an abscess near the tooth.
- A darkening tooth.

Don't delay treatment because of cost
Delaying a root canal can turn a simple inflammation into an abscess or lead to a fractured tooth โ making treatment more complex and costly, or leaving extraction as the only option. Early treatment saves you pain and money.
Frequently asked questions
Does the root canal price include the final filling?
It varies between clinics โ always ask whether it includes the final restoration or crown, or only the canal treatment.
Why is a molar more expensive than a front tooth?
Molars have more canals and can be more complex, needing more time and work.
Does every root-treated tooth need a crown?
Back molars usually do to prevent fracture; front teeth may only need a filling if enough tooth remains.
