Is teeth whitening right for you?
Yellow teeth are one of the most common smile concerns, and whitening is one of the most requested cosmetic treatments in Amman. But not all whitening methods are the same, and not all teeth respond equally. This guide covers the types of whitening, laser vs. at-home whitening, what affects the cost, and how to keep your results.
Why do teeth turn yellow?
- External stains from coffee, tea, smoking and coloured drinks โ these respond best to whitening.
- Ageing: enamel thins and the yellower dentine shows through.
- Internal stains from certain childhood medicines, excess fluoride or trauma โ these may not respond well, and veneers can be a better solution.
- Tartar: sometimes "yellowing" is just tartar and surface stains, removed by a professional clean and polish.
Types of teeth whitening
1. In-clinic whitening (including laser whitening)
A professional-strength gel is applied after protecting the gums, sometimes activated by light or laser. Usually one session, with immediate, visible results under the dentist's supervision.
2. Dentist-supervised home whitening
We take impressions and make custom clear trays; you wear them with whitening gel for several days as instructed. Results are gradual and even, and it suits sensitive teeth.
3. Over-the-counter products
Toothpastes, strips and home light devices are usually milder, and some only remove surface stains. Overuse can cause sensitivity and gum irritation.
| In-clinic / laser | Supervised home | Over-the-counter | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speed | Immediate (one visit) | Days to two weeks | Slow, limited |
| Strength | High | Good and even | Mild |
| Safety | Direct supervision, gum protection | Controlled strength, custom trays | Depends on product and use |
| Sensitivity | Possible, temporary | Usually less | Possible with overuse |
What affects the cost of whitening?
- Type: in-clinic, home trays, or both combined for stronger, longer-lasting results.
- Number of sessions depending on the degree of staining.
- Cleaning first: removing tartar before whitening gives a better, more even result.
- Treating decay or gums beforehand if needed.
Who shouldn't whiten?
- Crowns, veneers and composite fillings don't change colour, so they may stand out against whitened teeth.
- Active decay and gum disease should be treated first.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: it's best to postpone.
- Severe sensitivity: we check the cause first and choose a gentler method.
Does whitening damage teeth?
Whitening done under a dentist's supervision, at the right strength and duration, is safe for enamel. The most common side effect is temporary sensitivity that fades within a day or two. Overusing commercial products or home remedies (like lots of lemon or baking soda) can genuinely harm enamel.
Keeping your results
- Avoid coffee, tea, coloured drinks and smoking for the first 48 hours.
- Drink coloured drinks through a straw and rinse with water afterwards.
- Clean daily and have regular professional cleanings.
- A short top-up session or occasional home-tray use keeps teeth bright.
Frequently asked questions
How long do whitening results last?
Usually from several months to two years or more, depending on diet, smoking and daily care.
Is laser whitening better than home whitening?
Laser is faster with immediate results; supervised home whitening is gradual and gentler for sensitive teeth. We sometimes combine both for the best result.
Does whitening cause permanent sensitivity?
No โ sensitivity after whitening is usually temporary and fades within a day or two.
Do whitening toothpastes really whiten?
They remove some surface stains but don't change the tooth's underlying colour the way professional whitening does.
