Why do children's teeth decay so quickly?

Baby-tooth enamel is thinner than adult enamel, so decay spreads faster. Tooth decay is one of the most common health problems in children โ€” even though it's largely preventable. This guide explains causes and signs, when decay must be treated, and how to protect your child's teeth.

Causes of tooth decay in children

  • Falling asleep with a bottle of milk or juice ("bottle caries").
  • Frequent sugary snacks and juice between meals.
  • Not enough cleaning โ€” children can't brush well alone before age 7โ€“8.
  • Too little fluoride.
  • Bacteria passed from adults, such as sharing spoons.

Signs of decay in children

  • Chalky white spots near the gumline โ€” the first stage, which can be stopped.
  • Brown or black spots, or holes.
  • Sensitivity or pain when eating or drinking.
  • Refusing food, or chewing on one side.
  • Swollen gum or a "pimple" near a tooth โ€” an abscess that needs prompt treatment.

Should decay in baby teeth be treated?

Yes. Baby teeth matter for chewing, speech and holding space for adult teeth. Untreated decay can cause:

  • Pain and infection affecting sleep, eating and concentration.
  • An abscess that may affect the developing adult tooth underneath.
  • Early tooth loss, which can lead to crowding of adult teeth later.

Prevention: 8 tips for parents

  1. Start brushing from the first tooth with an age-appropriate amount of fluoride toothpaste.
  2. Help your child brush twice a day until around age 7โ€“8.
  3. Don't put your child to bed with a bottle of milk or juice.
  4. Make water the main drink; limit juice, even natural juice.
  5. Give sweets with meals, not between them.
  6. Ask about fluoride varnish at the clinic.
  7. Ask about fissure sealants for new adult molars.
  8. Visit the dentist every 6 months, starting from age one.
