How long do zirconia crowns and veneers last?

Zirconia crowns and veneers aren't temporary, but they don't last forever either. Their lifespan depends on the material, the quality of preparation and fitting, and above all on your daily care and habits. This guide explains the usual lifespan of each type, what shortens it, and how to make your restorations last as long as possible. It was written under the supervision of Dr. Banan Alhawamdeh, specialist in periodontics and cosmetic dentistry.

Usual lifespan by type

TypeUsual lifespan with good care
Zirconia crownOften 10โ€“15 years, many last longer
Porcelain or E-max veneerOften 10โ€“15 years
Composite veneer (bonding)Often 4โ€“8 years, and can be polished and repaired

These are approximate figures from clinical experience and studies, not a guarantee; they vary a lot between patients. For the differences between these materials, read veneers vs E-max vs zirconia.

What shortens their life?

  • Teeth grinding or clenching at night: one of the most common causes of chipped or cracked porcelain.
  • Decay at the edges: the tooth under a crown can still decay if it isn't cleaned well.
  • Gum inflammation and recession: can expose the edge of the restoration and change how it looks.
  • Bad habits: nail biting, opening packaging with your teeth, or crunching ice and hard objects.
  • Smoking, coffee and tea: affect composite and restoration edges more.

Signs you should see the dentist

  • A change in colour at the edge, or a dark line at the gum.
  • New sensitivity or pain when chewing.
  • A feeling of movement or a gap under the restoration.
  • An unpleasant smell or taste around it.
  • A chip or crack, even a small one.
  • Bleeding or swelling in the gum around it.

Catching a problem early can mean a simple repair instead of replacing the whole restoration.

How to look after your restorations

  1. Brush twice a day with a soft brush and a non-abrasive toothpaste.
  2. Clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes, especially around the edges.
  3. Regular professional cleaning and a check of your restorations about every 6 months.
  4. A custom night guard if you grind your teeth.
  5. Don't use your teeth as tools.

Frequently asked questions

Does zirconia change colour over time?

Zirconia and porcelain keep their colour very well, but the edges and the gum around them can change. Composite can pick up stains over time and may need polishing.

Can veneers or zirconia be whitened?

No, whitening doesn't change the colour of restorations. If you want lighter natural teeth next to them, it's best to whiten before the restorations are designed.

What happens when a restoration is replaced?

The old restoration is removed, the tooth underneath is checked and treated if needed, and a new one is made. See our treatment prices.
