What is teeth grinding?
Teeth grinding (bruxism) means clenching or grinding the teeth forcefully, usually during sleep without noticing, and sometimes during the day when concentrating or stressed. Many people find out when a family member hears the grinding at night, or when the dentist notices worn teeth.
Signs of teeth grinding
- Pain or tiredness in the jaw muscles, especially on waking.
- Morning headaches at the temples.
- Teeth that look flat, short or worn at the edges.
- Cracked or broken teeth, fillings or crowns.
- Tooth sensitivity.
- Clicking or pain in the jaw joint.
- Gum recession at certain teeth from excess pressure.
Causes
- Stress and anxiety, one of the most common causes.
- Sleep disorders such as snoring and sleep apnoea.
- Caffeine, smoking and some medications.
- A bite that doesn't fit, in some cases.
Why it should be treated
The repeated force can be much stronger than normal chewing, and over time it wears the enamel, breaks teeth and restorations, and strains the jaw joint. People with veneers, crowns or implants need extra protection, because grinding is a common reason they break.
Treatment
- A night guard: a custom-made tray worn during sleep that protects the teeth from grinding and eases the load on the muscles and joint. It's the most important step in most cases.
- Reducing stress: a regular sleep routine, relaxation exercises, and less caffeine in the evening.
- Daytime awareness: remind yourself to keep lips closed and teeth slightly apart.
- Repairing damage: treating sensitivity and restoring worn or broken teeth.
- Sleep assessment: if there's heavy snoring or breathing pauses, see a doctor.
Frequently asked questions
Is an over-the-counter night guard enough?
It can be a temporary fix, but a custom-made guard is more comfortable, stable and protective, and it doesn't change your bite.
Do children grind their teeth?
Yes, it's common in children and often eases with growth. Have your child checked if there's pain or obvious wear.
Can I have veneers or implants if I grind my teeth?
In many cases yes, with a suitable material and a night guard after treatment.
