When does a tooth need a crown?

A crown (cap) covers the whole tooth to protect it and restore its shape and function. A tooth usually needs one:

  • After a root canal, especially back teeth, which become weaker and prone to fracture.
  • A large fracture or crack.
  • Extensive decay or a large filling with little tooth left.
  • Severe wear from grinding.
  • Improving shape and colour when a veneer isn't enough.
  • On an implant to replace a missing tooth.

What determines the price of a single crown?

1. Material

MaterialRelative costBest for
Porcelain-fused-to-metalUsually lowestWhen price is the priority
ZirconiaMedium to highMolars and bridges โ€” high strength, metal-free
E-maxMedium to highFront teeth โ€” top aesthetics

2. Tooth condition before crowning

The tooth may first need a root canal, or a core build-up (post) if little remains โ€” separate steps added to the crown cost.

3. Gum health around the tooth

A crown needs healthy gums to last. Sometimes gum treatment or crown lengthening is needed to expose enough tooth โ€” a gum surgery procedure.

4. Natural tooth or implant

A crown on an implant needs an extra abutment, so its price differs.

5. Lab and manufacturing

Digital design and precise hand-staining to match your teeth affect both the result and the price.

The crown process

  1. Examination and X-ray to see if any treatment is needed first.
  2. Tooth preparation under local anaesthesia.
  3. Impression and shade selection.
  4. Temporary crown to protect the tooth.
  5. Fitting the final crown after checking shape and bite.

Usually two visits, more if the tooth needs treatment first.

Before you compare prices

  • Does the price include the temporary crown?
  • Exactly which material and manufacturer?
  • Does the tooth need a root canal or post โ€” and is that included?
  • Is there a warranty?

Frequently asked questions

Does getting a crown hurt?

Preparation is done under local anaesthesia, so there's no pain during the visit; mild temporary sensitivity afterwards is possible.

How long does a crown last?

Many years with good care and regular check-ups, depending on material and bite.

Can a single crown match my other teeth?

Yes โ€” the shade is carefully matched to neighbouring teeth. If you plan to whiten, do it before the crown.

What's the difference between a crown and a filling?

A filling restores part of a tooth; a crown covers and protects the whole tooth when it's too weak for a filling.
